Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)

Palm oil mills generate a huge amount of wastewater during the oil extraction process. This wastewater is called Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). It's usually thick, brown, and contains a high amount of organic matter, oil, grease, and solids. If not treated properly, POME can cause serious environmental issues like water pollution and foul smells. Due to the increasing environmental concerns and strict discharge norms, proper treatment of POME has become very important. But treating POME isn’t easy. Its high COD, BOD, suspended solids, and oil content make it tough for conventional systems to handle effectively — especially without using chemicals or large treatment setups.

Challenges in POME Treatment

Very High Organic Load

POME contains large amounts of oil, grease, fibres, and organic residues.

Thick and Oily Consistency

Makes it difficult for filtration and regular biological treatment methods.

Strong Odor and Dark Colour

Hard to remove without advanced technologies.

High COD & BOD

Causes major pollution if discharged untreated.

Large Treatment Area Required

Traditional systems need lagoons or big tanks, which isn’t feasible for many mills.

Compliance Pressure

Industries face strict rules to manage and reduce their wastewater load.
